Moving From Florida to Georgia? Here’s What Happens to Your Medicare
Some parts of Medicare travel with you. Others don’t. The good news: a permanent move gives you a Special Enrollment Period to pick a new plan without waiting for Annual Enrollment. We’re a Lakeland agency licensed in both states, so we can look at both sides of your move in one conversation.
What Travels With You — and What Doesn’t
The simplest way to think about it: Original Medicare and Medigap move with you. Medicare Advantage and Part D don’t. Here’s the breakdown.
Original Medicare (Part A & Part B)
Travels with you nationwide. You don’t need to re-enroll when you move to Georgia.
Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
Works with any doctor who accepts Medicare nationwide. Your premium may change, but the plan moves with you.
Medicare Advantage (Part C)
Tied to a service area. A Florida plan won’t work as your primary coverage in Georgia. A permanent move gives you a Special Enrollment Period to pick a new plan.
Part D (prescription drug plan)
Tied to a service area. You’ll need to choose a new Part D plan available in your Georgia ZIP code.
Why Timing Matters
When you move permanently out of your Medicare Advantage or Part D plan’s service area, you get a Special Enrollment Period — typically a two-month window after you notify your plan of the move. That’s your chance to pick a new plan available in your Georgia ZIP code without waiting for the Annual Enrollment Period in the fall.
The risk is a gap in coverage. If you wait too long after your move, your old plan may stop covering you before your new plan starts. We recommend calling us before your move date, or right after you arrive, so we can line up your new plan to start as soon as possible.
If you have Original Medicare plus a Medigap plan, there’s less urgency — both travel with you. But it’s still worth reviewing your Medigap premium, since it may change based on your new Georgia address.
What to Bring to Your Plan Review
A good plan comparison starts with good information. Before we compare Georgia plans, gather these three things:
Your doctor list
Every doctor, specialist, and hospital you see regularly — in Florida, in Georgia, or both.
Your prescription list
Every medication with the dose and pharmacy. Drug costs vary more than premiums between plans.
Your new address
Your Georgia ZIP code determines which plans are available to you. Have this ready when you call.
Your Move Checklist
Gather your doctor list
Write down every doctor, specialist, and hospital you currently use in Florida. We’ll check which ones are in-network on Georgia plans — and whether any Georgia plans include Florida providers.
Gather your prescription list
List every medication with the dose and pharmacy. Drug costs can vary more than premiums between plans, so this is essential for a fair comparison.
Confirm your new Georgia address
Your new address and ZIP code determine which Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are available to you. Have this ready when you call.
Call us before your move date
A permanent move triggers a Special Enrollment Period, but timing matters. Call us before or right after your move so we can help you pick a new plan without a gap in coverage.
Why a Lakeland Agency Helps on Both Sides
We’re based in Lakeland, Florida, and we’re licensed in both Florida and Georgia. That matters for a move because we can look at the Florida plan you’re leaving and the Georgia plans you’re moving into in the same conversation. You don’t have to start over with a new agent who doesn’t know your coverage history.
If you’ve worked with us before in Florida, we already know your doctors, your prescriptions, and your preferences. That makes the transition smoother. And if you’re brand new to us, we’ll take the time to understand both sides of your move so nothing falls through the cracks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) works nationwide. You don’t need to re-enroll or change anything when you move from Florida to Georgia. What changes are the private plans layered on top — Medicare Advantage and Part D.
A permanent move out of your Medicare Advantage or Part D plan’s service area gives you a Special Enrollment Period. This is a window of time — typically two months after you notify your plan of the move — during which you can enroll in a new plan available in your Georgia ZIP code without waiting for Annual Enrollment.
Generally yes. Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans are not tied to a service area the way Medicare Advantage plans are. Your Medigap plan works with any doctor who accepts Medicare nationwide. Your premium may change based on your new location, so we’ll review it with you.
If you maintain a primary residence in both states, the key question is which address is on file with Social Security as your primary residence. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are tied to that service area. A Medigap plan may be a better fit if you regularly see doctors in both states, since it has no network restrictions.
We’re based in Lakeland, Florida and licensed in both Florida and Georgia. That means we understand the Florida plans you’re leaving and the Georgia plans you’re moving into. We can compare your old coverage against your new options in one conversation — no starting over with a new agent who doesn’t know your Florida history.
No. Our help is free to you. We’re paid by the insurance carriers, and your plan premium is the same whether you enroll on your own or with us.
