Moved from Florida to the North Georgia Mountains? Let's Get Your Medicare Right.
Many Floridians are making the move to Blue Ridge, Blairsville, Ellijay, and the surrounding mountain communities. We're a Lakeland agency, so we understand both sides of the move — and we're licensed in Georgia to help you compare plans once you get there.
Why Medicare Planning Matters in the Mountains
The North Georgia Mountains have become a popular retirement destination for Floridians looking for cooler weather, lower property taxes, and a slower pace of life. Fannin, Union, Towns, and Gilmer counties draw new residents to Blue Ridge, Blairsville, Hiawassee, and Ellijay, while nearby Hall County offers the conveniences of Gainesville and the Lake Lanier area.
But mountain communities have something most of Florida doesn't: fewer hospital options and longer drives to specialty care. The nearest major hospital for many mountain residents is Northeast Georgia Health System in Gainesville, which can be an hour or more from Blue Ridge or Blairsville. That distance matters when you're choosing a Medicare Advantage plan, because network coverage in rural mountain counties is often thinner than in metro areas.
If you're moving from Florida, your current Medicare Advantage plan almost certainly won't cover Georgia doctors as your primary coverage. The good news is that a permanent move out of your plan's service area gives you a Special Enrollment Period to choose a new Georgia plan — and we can walk you through it step by step.
For residents who split time between Florida and the mountains, a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan may be worth considering instead of Medicare Advantage, since Medigap plans generally work with any doctor who accepts Medicare nationwide — no network restrictions, no service area worries.

Local Hospitals to Ask About
Northeast Georgia Health System (Gainesville)
The largest system serving the mountain region, with the main hospital in Gainesville.
Piedmont Mountainside (Jasper)
A smaller community hospital serving Pickens and surrounding mountain counties.
Mountain areas have fewer in-network options, so we'll check your doctors and hospitals before you choose a plan.
Medicare Plan Considerations for the Mountains
Mountain counties have fewer participating Medicare Advantage plans than metro Atlanta, so your carrier options may be limited depending on your ZIP code.
Specialty care often means a drive to Gainesville or even further south. If you see a specialist outside the mountains, make sure they’re in-network before you enroll.
Rural areas sometimes have fewer in-network primary care doctors. We’ll check which plans include your local clinic before you switch.
If you split your time between Florida and the mountains, a Medicare Supplement plan may offer more flexibility than a regional Medicare Advantage plan with a tight service area.
What Happens to Your Medicare When You Move
Medicare Advantage plans are tied to a service area, so a Florida plan usually won’t work as your main coverage in Georgia.
A permanent move out of your plan’s service area gives you a Special Enrollment Period to choose a new plan.
If you have a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan, it generally moves with you, but your premium may change. We’ll review it with you.
