If you're on a UnitedHealthcare plan here in Polk County, the last year has probably been stressful. When Lakeland Regional Health and UnitedHealthcare couldn't reach an agreement, a lot of my clients got letters warning that their coverage at Lakeland Regional could end, and some folks switched plans for 2026 just to be safe.

So I'm glad to share some good news heading into Annual Enrollment.

The news

Lakeland Regional Health has announced that it reached a three-year agreement with UnitedHealthcare that runs through September 30, 2029. According to Lakeland Regional, the agreement covers commercial, Medicare, and Medicaid plans, and there's no interruption to in-network access. Patients with UnitedHealthcare plans can keep their scheduled appointments as normal. You can read Lakeland Regional's announcement here.

That means UnitedHealthcare members can plan on Lakeland Regional being part of the picture for the 2027 plan year.

What this means for you

If you already have a UnitedHealthcare plan

You don't need to do anything about Lakeland Regional. But don't skip your annual review. Your 2027 Annual Notice of Change spells out what's changing with your plan next year, including premiums, copays, and your drug list. Plans change every year, even when the hospital news is good.

If you left UnitedHealthcare for 2026

If the only reason you moved was the Lakeland Regional situation, it's worth taking a fresh look this fall. That doesn't mean switching back is automatically right for you. Your current plan may still be the better fit. But you deserve to compare with all the facts in front of you.

If you're new to Medicare

Having Lakeland Regional in network with another major carrier gives Polk County folks more options. It's one more reason to compare carriers side by side instead of grabbing the first plan you hear about.

Always check your specific plan

A hospital agreement is a big deal, but it isn't the whole story. Each Medicare Advantage plan has its own network, and individual doctors and specialists make their own decisions about which plans they accept. Before you enroll, I check:

  • Your primary care doctor and any specialists you see
  • The hospital you'd want to use, including Lakeland Regional
  • Your prescriptions on the plan's 2027 drug list
  • Your total yearly costs, not just the monthly premium

Key dates

Medicare Annual Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7, 2026. Any plan change you make starts January 1, 2027.
